When I first heard of online thrifting, I was genuinely confused. After all, thrift stores tend to be a mess of random, unique items that you find in the moment. Online shopping is specific and organized, so I didn't understand how a thrift store could fit into that mold.
ThredUP exceeded my expectations.
In late May, I had this overwhelming temptation to spend all of my money online shopping. I had been quarantining for a few months, and I was getting antsy for something new. That was when my friend told me about ThredUP. She convinced me to order one of their Goody Boxes, a customized package of hand-picked clothes for $10 a month. I took a style quiz and filled out my sizing, then patiently waited for the box to arrive.
And it did. I was at the beach when I got the notification that it was delivered in mid-June. Thankfully, I only had to wait another day before I could see what was inside. After arriving back home, the first thing I did was unpack the box. I liked most things, but not everything. Fortunately, ThredUP has a system in which you only pay for what you keep, so I just mailed everything I didn't want back. My favorite item was this fancy sparkly cocktail dress (pictured below). Little did I know that dress was marked down from $400 to just $70! I couldn't believe it, especially because it was in such great condition! I was instantly hooked on ThredUP.
Over the next few months, I developed a wish list, checked the website daily, and ordered a variety of new clothes, including a pair of ASOS pants (pictured below), a Kimchi Blue crop top, and some Abercrombie and Fitch jeans. The best part about all of this was that it taught me how simple and inexpensive it is to shop sustainably. Before I discovered ThredUP, I bought outfits from fast fashion brands like Shein, Romwe, and Zaful. I knew these brands were cruel to workers and bad for the environment, but I obsessed over getting cute clothes for a cheap price. ThredUP made it easy to access second-hand clothes that are good-quality, trendy, and affordable!
All in all, whether you want to try a Goody Box, buy some new clothes, or clean out your closet, I highly recommend checking out ThredUP. I never would have imagined how much I would fall in love with this online thrift store!
